Does Going to a 'Normal' School Disadvantage Me? | ArticlesBase.com

This is a common question of many students who wonder whether attending a 'normal' non-selective government school would disadvantage them in any way in their HSC.

The short answer is: there is no technical reason why you should be disadvantaged as a result of attending a 'normal' school.

However there may be other factors that can affect the correct answer to this question.

The system is technically fair

The way in which your ATAR / UAI is calculated is technically fair. It implements statistical methods of scaling to equate achievement levels in different HSC subjects on a common scale, in the form of scaled marks. The process of scaling for different subjects is the same, and applies in the same way to all students attending all schools.

But what about your internal marks? The component of your HSC that is assessed from internal school assessments are calculated from your rank at school. That is, how well you did (as a rank, not a mark) relative to your peers at school. The process that converts your school rank for each subject into a scaled mark is called the process of moderation.

Basically, with moderation, your internal HSC assessment component is mapped to your school rank for each subject, from the pool of external marks. For example, suppose Amanda, a Chemistry student, comes 5th overall in Chemistry within her school. Her external HSC exam mark was 92/100, which was the 2nd highest in her school. The 5th highest external exam mark in her school was 84/100. Then for Amanda's overall HSC mark, it would consist of 50% of her own mark of 92/100, and 50% of the 5th highest exam mark (because her rank was 5 th in Chemistry), which was 84/100. This leads to an overall mark of 88/100. However, note that in fact, this is an approximation only (Amanda would actually receive a mark close to 84/100 for her internal component, as there is an adjustment made due to the fact that marks distributions are not the same across different schools).

Basically, what this means is regardless of whether your school is considered 'good' or 'bad', your end result should not be affected, since your internal component is solely based on your school rank. If you do significantly better than your peers in a 'normal' school, your ranks would be 1t or close to 1 st for all your subjects. In this situation, you would end up receiving your own external HSC exam mark as your internal component. Effectively, this means that those students passing from any institute could count their final HSC exams for their final assessment. Now, other than the risk of placing too high weighting on the final exams, there is no inherent direct source of unfairness in this system - that is, you are not being 'pulled down' in a direct way by your peers in a 'normal' school.

However, as we see certain schools perform well year after year, there must be other factors in play, despite the system being technically fair.

The positive effect of being in a competitive environment

Schools that tend to do well consistently (e.g. look at the list of the top 50 schools in NSW) would have a culture of academic excellence. From this culture, students in these schools are more focused on their studies. Students have an amazing effect of pushing each other, motivating each other and the mutual competition drives students in these schools to high standards.

What can I do?

If you find you go to a school where students are not primarily interested in doing well in their HSC, you should firstly identify the few of your peers that are keen to do well, and form working relationships with them. Study together, motivate each other, share notes etc. These things are mutually beneficial, and the healthy competition you get from each other will be beneficial to your marks.

Another suggestion is to find a quality tutoring service and attend their classes. Reputable tutoring colleges will have no problem attracting bright students who are keen to do very well in their HSC. Students can benefit from the structured environment a class offers, and being able to learn at the same level as other bright students will be beneficial to your marks.

The quality of teachers and teaching

Generally speaking, students at 'good' schools receive a better learning experience. This is due to a number of factors. For example, in 'bad' schools, teachers need to spend more class time on classroom management (managing the disruptive students, making sure their behaviour is acceptable etc), leaving less time for actual teaching. Disruptive students also pull the class behind in terms of schedule, as teachers are forced to move at a slower pace to cater to all students.

The extreme example is that in particularly 'bad' schools, teachers are so fed up with disruptive students that their motivation to teach diminishes, and these situations despite being very unfortunate, are quite common.

Generally speaking, many teachers gravitate towards transferring to the 'good' schools, mainly because the easier classroom management (less need to manage disruptive students) provides a more pleasant working environment for them. Now, this does not apply to all teachers, but it is likely to be true on a wide scale. Such teachers represent a migration of quality teaching from the 'bad' schools to the 'good' schools, as their transfer requests to the DET are granted over time.

This leads onto the second point of teacher retention. Retention rates tend to be highest at well-off private schools or high-ranking selective schools. Most teachers working at such schools are happy where they are, and would not seek to leave their post until they retire. However, retention rates at other schools tend to be lower for various reasons that we will not go into. For example, how many times have you noticed 'good' teachers leaving for another (often higher ranked, or private) school?

However, this is NOT to say that there are no 'good' teachers in 'normal' schools. There are countless dedicated teachers out there that do not work at high-ranking selective or well-off private schools, and they are rightly well respected for the good work they do.

What can I do?

This problem is a tricky one to solve or avoid. If you find that there are no good teachers for certain subjects you are taking, we really suggest seeking a tutoring service, or even a good private tutor. Reputable tutoring colleges will always have high quality teachers as part of their academic staff.

Conclusion

Although the technical details of the scaling and moderation processes are inherently fair, and that there are no direct sources of disadvantage to students attending schools that are neither high-ranked selective or private schools, there are other factors that may cause a disadvantage in real terms. While not every student can have the luxury of being surrounded by other hard working bright peers that push and motivate each other to do well, this effect could be emulated by attending a reputable tutoring college, or by seeking like-minded individuals at school. Students and parents should also consider seeking a tutoring service if they feel that their school teacher is not offering adequate support.

But most importantly, don't leave it until too late! Every assessment in year 12 counts to your HSC and UAI / ATAR, so make sure you receive adequate support from day one of year 12, at the very least!
About the Author:

Dux College is a reputable tutoring college based in Sydney, Australia specializes in delivering high school tutoring services that aims at improving UAI score. Auto Shipping International Style

Traveling internationally can open your eyes, mind, heart and soul. The gorgeous vistas, cultures, food, music and people can unlock the mysteries within you and the world. Sometimes we travel on foot other times we travel in vehicles but if we have a specific vehicle we want to ride along with us during our travels we must prepare its departure along with ours.

International Auto Shipping

It's important to find an international auto shipping company that can assist and support you in this endeavor; for it's not easy to do on your own.

Allowing the company 7 to 14 days to complete the trip on their W-E runs can make the time frames quicker on specific routes, but a majority of time it takes approximately 20 to 30 days for shipping. Planning enough time for the company to ship your vehicle overseas is needed. International shipping companies will let you plan up to two months before departure however the carrier will need about two weeks in advance for the shipment. If one needs the vehicle in advance companies will work on an individual basis with priority. You are normally scheduled to pick up your vehicle within 2 or 3 days. If your destination is inaccessible to you the shipping company will ask the driver to get as close as possible to your desired location, and if you are not available to pick up your vehicle it may have to go to a terminal for you to get it, but having an alternative part or family member to pick and sign the car for you is also a good idea.

If you have any requests for a different time frame or delivery they're most likely able to accommodate to your schedule; of course this will vary in the pricing forefront. Rates are determined by size and weight, and you can either prepay or pay in the country through one of their agents. Most international shipping companies allow you to pay with personal checks, cashiers' checks, postal money orders, and major credit cards. Also it's mandatory when shipping overseas that your gas tank should be as low as possible, for their convenience.

Some customers ask, since the car is going international, if they can pack personal belongings in the car. However, the Department of Transportation has ruled, as of 1998, that you may not leave or pack any items in your vehicle. All trucks are occasionally checked for items within the vehicles, and have the right to dispose of them. Household items and personal belongings are not allowed in vehicles, whether it is international or domestic. Your items are also not covered by carriers insurance so the risk of loading all your belongings in your vehicle isn't a good idea. Also any damage that is made by the goods or items stuffed in your car is not covered. If items are loaded into the vehicles it adds more weight to your car; which can affect the international shipping carrier and their trucks. It can damage the loading and unloading of your vehicle causing harm to the suspension of your car.

To learn more about auto transport or to get a free shipping quote visit http://www.jmnhaul.com.

Practical Ways by Which You Can Be of Help to Your Mesothelioma Friend

Your friend that has come down with mesothelioma cancer may find it hard to ask for help or to appear vulnerable. Do not tell the person to "be brave" or to "be strong",when people do this to cancer victims they are only putting them under a lot of unnecessary pressure on them to act strong even when they do not feel up to it.

Families can put subtle pressure on people with cancer by expecting or needing them to be strong all the time. In that case, you might play an important role for a friend who has cancer. He or she may know you well and trust you enough to confide in you, yet you don't have the emotional attachment and expectations of a family member. This kind of relationship can be a great gift for a person facing cancer.

Our basic human nature makes us want to distance ourselves from people that become seriously ill. When someone close to us develops mesothelioma cancer we are forced to confront our own fears about illness, weakness, or death. This may make us reluctant to interact with the affected person. But isolation can be a problem for people with cancer. Make an extra effort to reach out.

These are some of the ways by which you can help the mesothelioma cancer victim:

1- If your friend needs medical equipment or money for treatment, you can look into getting something donated or organize a raffle to help raise money. Or you can simply take up a collection to buy something that might not be covered by insurance.

2- The person with cancer may look to you for advice regarding financial worries, work issues, or other concerns. Be honest. Help if you can, but if you feel uncomfortable, say so. There are many places a person can get help and support, and you might suggest seeking the advice of a professional who is best suited to give that kind of guidance.

3- Keep your communication lines with the victim as open and free as possible. Continue to treat your friend as normally as possible, and talk about how the person is managing and what they need. But don't feel that you always have to talk about cancer. Include them in activities and social events. If they aren't up to doing something, let them be the one to decide to say no. Keep inviting them unless they tell you otherwise.

4- Ask what they could use; let them tell you what would be most helpful. Offer to help in specific ways.

5- Send or prepare a meal. Arrange a schedule of meal delivery.

6- Offer to help with child care. Arrange a schedule of day care pick-ups.

7- Offer a ride to and from treatment appointments.

8- Help run errands.

9- Offer to take phone calls if your friend is feeling tired and needs to rest.

10- Coordinate visits by groups, or coordinate sending cards, flowers, or gifts.

11- Honor your friend by making contributions to related charities, organizing blood drives, or making special efforts in his or her name.

12- Offer to do some research on their unanswered questions about cancer, or refer them to the American Cancer Society at 1-800-227-2345.

13- You can plan a party for your friend upon the completion of his/her therapy. However make sure you check with the victim before you make your party plans, show him/her the list of those invited.

CD Alarm Clocks - the Way to Wake Up With Music

Unfortunately, if you're not a billionaire, and maybe even so, you still have to get out of bed in the morning and start your day. This can be either a pleasant experience or not, depending solely on the thing that will awaken you. A rough buzzer can be something that can make you want to keep staying in bed, while a song that you like on the radio can really jumpstart your day.

A good start in the morning is really important, since, statistically, it will define how you will feel during the day. As said before, a good song on the radio is a lot more pleasant than a rough buzz. However, the chances that a song you like will play when you wake up are really slim, and a song that you don't like will have the same frustrating effect as the buzzer. A good option would be to program what song you want to play when you wake up.

For those of you that like to hear a certain song when you wake up, then the answer is simple: just buy a CD alarm clock. This will allow you to start your mornings in listening your favorite tune, and will make your day better.

The only question is which CD Alarm Clock to choose. Well, needless to say, this is something that you and only you can decide, since it depends on both your taste and on your budget. However, there are certain features that every device that calls itself CD alarm clock needs to have, and you should check for those when purchasing one.

First of all, you should choose a brand new device, since, if there are any problems with it, you have your guarantee. Another thing, most CD alarm clocks have AM FM radio, which can be a really useful feature if you like to keep informed with all the latest news and trends in music. Also, the CD alarm clock should have the option of waking up with the CD player, besides the radio or the buzzer; if it doesn't, you pretty much risk wasting your money. Other features that the device should have are programmable memory, and playback features like shuffle or random, repeat one or all, besides the play pause stop rewind and fast forward. One more thing you should check when you buy a CD alarm clock, is that the devices comes with an AC power supply cord and manual, and also, a 30 day money back guarantee is always nice and handy.

Please click on link for more information - CD Alarm Clocks

The Romance of Jewelry

"Well," you may ask, "isn't jewelry romantic by it's very nature?"
To some extent this is true, but we wear jewelry for any number of reasons that are not romantic... to look sophisticated, to look professional, to impress our friends and neighbors.
So what about the romance of jewelry?
In this case I'm talking about romance in a broader sense than simply relationships.
Something more like this definition from the dictionary:
"A quality or feeling of mystery, excitement, and remoteness from everyday life"
That wonderful fission, that bit of a chill that you get from something that is just, well, more than day to day life.
Romantic jewelry is that jewelry that makes you feel special, different, like a princess or a prince. That jewelry that takes you out of your normal hum drum life each time you put it on. The little something extra that comes of wearing something truly special.
Perhaps that is why gold is such a popular metal for jewelry. I love silver and platinum and there are other metals (titanium comes to mind) that make great jewelry, but there is nothing like the romance of gold. To wear gold is to wear the jewelry of kings and queens. In ancient Egypt only the pharaohs and those especially favored by the pharaohs were permitted to wear gold. This feeling of being special and above the fray has continued to the modern day. If you want to feel like royalty (or if you want to give a gift that says you think of your beloved as a king or queen), gold is the answer.
Other jewels that inspire feelings of romance are pearls, emeralds and rubies... and, of course, for many people, diamonds.
Somehow though diamonds don't seem to have the same warmth and romance as the other stones. Actually diamonds were not historically valued as highly was we do today. Much of the romance that has been generated around diamonds is do to de Beers in the early part of the 20th century instituting a brilliant and very effective advertising campaign... so I will leave diamonds for another day.
On the other hand pearls... Pearls feel wonderful against your skin. They are sensuous and mysterious. To look deeply into a fine pearl is to look into eternity. There is also something intriguing about a pearl, knowing that is came not from the cold hard ground, but from an industrious mollusk.
Pearls have been prized in all time periods and all cultures. Historically baroque pearls (large irregularly shaped pearls) were used to make wonderful and fantastic jewelry by embellishing them with gold an gems. Frequently these took the shape of Neptune or other greek gods, sirens, beautiful women and animals. The Canning Jewel in the Victoria and Albert museum is a famous and elaborate use of a baroque as the base for a handsome merman.
Black pearls, particularly Tahitian black pearls have become very popular in recent years. They come in a range of colors from spectacular purples and greens, through pinks to sophisticated browns. All are lovely and the range of colors gives them a great deal of flexibility in choosing just the right pearl for your outfit and mood. The most beautiful black pearl necklace I've seen was from Morrison's a small manufacturing jeweler in Berkeley. The pearls were arranged in a rainbow strung together so that each color melted into the one next to it -- stunning. And of course what could be more romantic than pearls from Tahiti?
(By the way, if you wear pearls, do wear them against your skin, it is good for them, but be sure that you do not wear any perfume, scent or lotion, at least not where it might contact your pearls.)
Emeralds and rubies are traditionally the emperor and empress of gems. Perhaps it is their vibrant colors that inspired our ancestors. Certainly that vivid blood red and cool serpent green are hard to ignore. Even today emeralds and rubies of equal size and quality are more expensive than equivalent diamonds.
In Victorian times colored gems were used to spell out love messages. Sometimes this made for interesting and not necessarily attractive settings; but it is very romantic. For instance a piece of jewelry might have these gems in order:
LOVE: Lapis, Opal, Vermeil and Emerald. REGARD: Ruby, Emerald, Garnet, Amethyst, Ruby and Diamond.
The shape of jewelry too can harbor a romantic message. Hearts and clasped hands, hands holding a heart (Claddagh) and cupids are self explanatory, but some shapes are a bit more subtle.
For many cultures, including the Romans and the Victorians, snakes were a symbol of enduring love. A snake biting it's own tail so as to make a circle is a particularly potent symbol of everlasting love. Prince Albert gave Queen Victoria a snake engagement ring -- the beginning of a long and celebrated marriage.
Interestingly lizards and frogs were (and perhaps still are) also symbols of wedded happiness. Perhaps this explains the continuing popularity of jewelry depicting this wiggly creatures.
Jewelry in the shape of flowers may also be symbolic. To quote Ophelia "There's rosemary, that's for remembrance; pray, love, remember: and there is pansies. That’s for thoughts."
Other flowers commonly found in jewelry are daisies for innocence, roses for the growth and continuation of love and bouquets expressing the commingling and compatibility of marriage. When you are considering the perfect gift from that next anniversary, rather than the common "anniversary ring" how about a more romantic bouquet pendant?
So the next time you are rooting through your jewel box before that special tryst or looking for the perfect gift for the perfect lover, consider the symbolic romance of jewelry and gems.

Due to Cheynne's widespread ability for new employment, more and more people are starting to move there. However, employment is not the only thing that the city has to offer. Usually, Cheyenne will have normal weather just like the rest of the United States and you can expect to see many people who enjoy being able to relax and be out and about.

Houses in Cheyenne are not in overwhelming supply. While more and more homes are being built, it does take some time to find an open home that is new construction. The homes that are open are ones that people are moving out of. There are very few homes of this type, and the ones that are open may need some minor repair work. If you have enough time and energy, you can find your perfect house, just be ready to go after it as soon as you see it in order to ensure you will have it.
Why It's Important to Learn Guitar Basics

Do you know what will ensure your success in learning a guitar? Learn guitar basics first before trying to do the complicated stuff.

Some people just don't understand why they should go through the basics before moving forward, thinking that these can be learned along the way. Little do they know that as you go on learning, you always have to consider the fundamentals to understand the current lesson.

For example, say you want to learn a specific chord. What if your instructions tell you to position your 1st finger on the A string on the 2nd fret, your middle finger on the upper E string and your ring finger on the lower E string, both on the 3rd fret to play the G major chord? How will you understand what you're being directed to do if you don't know what a fret is or where A, lower E and upper E are?

It's important that you know the arrangements of the strings, which is from the thickest to the thinnest and are assigned the musical letters EADGBE respectively. Whereas frets are the sections between the metal bars found on the guitar's neck.

Other guitar basics that you must note are the different parts of your guitar such as the head, neck and body along with proper holding of the instrument.

You also need to know the difference between strumming and picking. Strumming is when you brush the strings together to produce a sound whereas picking is when you play one string at a time in a fast successive motion.

You'll never go wrong once you learn guitar basics. So, when you start your guitar lessons, don't ignore the fundamentals. They'll help you become a better guitar player.

Cassandra Calle loves to play guitar and provide lessons for students. Saving Money on College Textbooks

Amazing how the prices have spiked during the last year alone, along with professors who require new editions of previous textbooks every semester (ditto same, nothing changed). Apparently this is the structure of universities and book publishers to conspire against us, the students, and monetize on our need to obtain an education. Most of the time, book stores just plainly rip us off as I have compared prices against prominent websites. In addition, the return policies for most University Bookstores are stringent where the returns are ineligible if the semester starts. What if I wanted to drop classes, what happens to the $168.00 statistics book that I no longer need? And there is new edition out next semester. Apparently I am screwed, as are many students across United States.

Being in my senior year and on the Dean's List, I am about to complete one of the biggest accomplishments of my life. I have been able to manage myself and continue education at the very finest level. As a Business student with developing business acumen, I try to save cost on any and everything I can. This character of frugality is inspired by the biggest names in history. They have offered me the essence of Money and Time (Thanks to English Literature Class). It is through these principles that I can sense a savings factor contributing to my wealth. If you read this article, you may inhibit the mentality it requires to become successful and hard working. Starting this behavior early and developing this attitude will rain numerous rewards and appreciation.

Stage one: Obtain Book ISBNs, Title and Authors
As soon as you register for classes, make a list of required textbooks that your professor is going to follow. Nearly all universities these days have dynamic linkage of information from the instructor to the bookstore. What you need are the three important things to find a relevant textbook; the title, the author(s) and the ISBN number (located below the Barcode, not above). Make a note or fancy it with excel, whatever just get this important piece of information however you can.

Stage two: Class and instructor analysis
This is one of the critical stages where a student needs to analyze the schematics of his/her class and teaching methods of a particular professor. What I meant is, when I take a marketing class I know it is an easy class as it does not include rigorous calculations or strenuously long problems. So I know I can dominate this course through smart memorization with devoted note taking skills. On the other hand, my quantitative decision making class which is a tough one, I need to be tactical in my approach. This is where a professor needs to be present (at least for me in math) and pass on knowledge through demonstration including an active dialectic method. Before I even register for class, my social network in school gives me an added advantage as to choose which professor is worthy. Another tool I use are sites like ratemyprofessor.com, as to find the best ones with the not the easiest ratings but the professors who are well rounded overall because I like to challenge myself and it is through these difficulties and inevitable mistakes that I learn.

Once you have an idea of how your classes operate and at what scale of difficulty, your focus should deviate towards the Instructor. Here I judge them through several attributes based on leniency, strictness, articulation, memory, references, clumsiness, openness, appearance and professionalism. Your teacher is the dictator here, whatever perception they have of you, you will get that grade. And my theory is to be friends with the enemy similar to Sun Tzu's approach 'Know your enemy.' I like to achieve common grounds and outshine as a protagonist amongst other students. This technique accumulates; I would say 'imaginary bonus points' towards the end of semester, very resourceful once you obtain this bond, this linkage. This scenario of winning motivates me and I relate winning in battle as getting an A in class. The teachers throw difficult questions at you; different tactics every now and then like pop quizzes, research papers, group projects or pick on your contemporaries.

Analysis Continued : Professor X
Coming back to the topic, how does this theory correlates with you saving money? This is where I further dissect the attributes of a professor. For example; Professor X whose poodle face, goofy personality emits sort of leniency and clumsiness, I know I can get away with 'stuff.' Onetime, I had this instructor, really a genius who helped me figure out several problems and giving all of us individual attention, very helpful, he lacked proper discipline and organization during many of his conversations. He could be easily persuaded on matters outside his field. His book where he kept his notes seemed like a rubbish mess of weary graded papers in-between the pages, as if he didn't care. Professor X also does not require you to bring the textbook to class but wants to lecture you on topic of maturity and the opinion of student responsibility that we should be responsible for our homework and attendance. For this type of instructor, I hold the priority of buying the book very low, unless course material is difficult itself.

Analysis Continued : Professor Y
Then appears at the podium, Professor Y, Why? Why! Why! That's what I said when I got this one. She was the aggressive, straight forward middle-aged women who could insult any student at any time, oblivious to any respect for anyone. She set her tone skillfully as she picked on the weakest students and questioned them for their unnecessary questions. Her remarks were down-right sarcastic in a condescending manner, and the rest of us would try to laugh but we couldn't because her head always swiveled and her eyes jumped out of her skull, like a hungry cat when interrupted during a meal. And then moving back to scorning the poor student. For this professor, many students drop out and clearly miss the significant part of self-development. I believe I got a chance to interact with a difficult person. During the course of her semester, I developed a defense against her arguments and learned to tolerate the belligerence. I was afraid to even go in class without looking at the calendar and checking upon my assignments as she kept no room for error. I respect this teacher as she virtually spanked all the students in learning one of the hardest courses in my degree plan. She solidified the foundations of this course; as a result I calmly breezed through the next courses. She provided a crash course in disciplining (Thank You!). Professor Y thus radiates the notion of fear and punishment and for this professor I would buy the book right away.

Analysis Continued : Professor Z
Of course followed by Professor Z, The loveable kind. As if a philanthropist in disguise, if you get this one you're really lucky! Very rare, I only had one during my five years. Overflowing with comfort and accommodations, my professor never took role, always enjoyed joking about recent issues and the time would expire within our discussions. We were watching more movies in class than actually reading anything. Assignments were due on certain dates, and brightest of us submitted it on time. While most students considered the freedom and gullibility of this professor, they always submitted assignments late, they arrived late in class; there were no punishments, no points taken off. The soft spoken professor was very predictable in his actions. The class was a stroll through the park, an easy A. I don't even recommend purchasing a book for this Instructor.

Analysis Continued : Professor XYZ
For the last kind, Professor XYZ, presumably the most familiar type you will find throughout your Universities. They have a common philosophy yet they are available in plenty of assortments. Not all lecturers are the same; they have their own temperament and a routine of teaching. They have a balanced character comprised of empathy, leverage and firmness while they carry out the sacred hand over of valuable experience and knowledge. These professors are in abundance and they are what we need. XYZ as you can tell is derived from previous three professors. Well proportioned (speaking academically), they know whose taking advantage; they know when to be tough and elaborate; and they know how to enforce rules and principles. Some voluntarily foster students as means of fulfilling an altruistic need within their personality. I believe that to be the greatest property of any teacher, to be concerned about and encourage the students to engage in their course. Perhaps there are exceptions to these professors, where one chooses to buy the book or not and hold the buying priority just right. This professor gives enough time to search for books, so students can locate the cheapest ones available. This point then leads to my next stage of actually searching for cheaper books.

Stage three: The Search for textbooks
There are five ways I hunt for textbooks; through friends, search engines and websites, halfprice book stores, libraries, and through the infamous university bookstore as a last resort. First of all, I scrap out all the contacts of friends out of my phone who go to same university or make new ones so that I can borrow books for the semester. Honestly the trend I have seen these days is that many of us don't sell our books. Most of my friends don't, who believe these books to be guides during later in life. They hang on to the book and read it on instances whenever they need help in that field. The book closes the missing link during the absence of a teacher. Even after graduation, one can polish their skills and understanding of the subject. The borrowing of material through friends is a reciprocal act where each contributes to one another. And it is through this circuitry that we all friends share the mutual savings.

After filtering out the books, the ones that are left, I then spend a good two or three hours searching for them online. The art of searching online begins from a need and desperation, which is to save our (or our parent's) hard earned money and study of course. This driven force steers us in the right direction and requires an art of creativity online. Under this motive combined with persistency, anyone can be successful at their attempt. Here are the bookmarks I use every semester to purchase the bulk of my textbooks listed below. Always print a receipt when purchasing online and don't buy books from overseas, it takes forever to reach here.

1. eBay.com - it's 2009, you should know what EBay is.

2. Half.com eBay owned company, direct buying from seller without the bidding.

3. Bigwords.com The best textbook searching website

4. Chegg.com Rent textbooks for less than half the price and return them.

5. Google Book Search Efficient book searching and price comparison

6. Abebooks.com Great sellers here with dirt cheap prices on new textbooks.

7. Powells.com Used, new and out of print books available

8. Biggerbooks.com Discount book store, used, new, best sellers and textbooks

9. Textbooksrus.com Buy Cheap textbooks and sell them

10. Betterworld.com Buy used books to fund literacy worldwide

11. Bookbyte.com Family style college bookstore but online.

Stage four: The Search for alternatives
Two out of four course textbooks have been sourced for Professor Y and XYZ; I need two more books for Professor X and Z. Victim of being poor, I allocate the rest of the money to peculiar alternatives. For both these Professors, I have decided to obtain textbooks that are an edition older. Instead of having nothing to read and striving for an A, I go forward and look for books that are old edition but from the same author. I try to read no less than one book a month out of mere interest and it is why I visit a place called 'Halfprice Book Store' once a month. Halfprice Stores are an extremely valuable destination for book aficionados. There I have noticed a nice little section of textbooks in every department. I wonder why? To my surprise, I found the textbook that pertained to one of my courses for only $11.98. Even though it was an older edition, they changed minuscule details when I compared it against the new version. Achievement here is well-deserved; after all it takes nerves to search inside at every Halfprice Store and dig through the din of books.

Stage Five: Desperate Measures
It is the third week of school and you are still missing one book. The Bookstore is charging you an arm and leg, your first assignment is due this week, you can't wait till Friday for your next paycheck, and you have failed in finding this textbook through the resources mentioned above. What do you do? Drop your class and extend your graduation date for another semester or have a heart attack at home. The serendipity I have experienced during my search was through endurance and self-reliance. I did not give up hope and I endlessly rummaged around to get a hold of this textbook. What I discovered was the power of local libraries and their network of libraries across town. There are two different libraries I found; library inside the university and local city libraries. Both evenly useful and free of charge. A website called worldcat.org provides a better search of books online and checks the availability according to proximity of each library. Borrow books from the library; they have old editions and new ones (rare). I have done it twice and I have easily save around two hundred dollars per semester.

This was my last ultimate resort to save as much as I could. The reward is worth more than its value because going to the libraries I was attracted towards reading other books. I gained wealth of knowledge as well as money.

Textbook Perception
Textbooks are a core fundamental unit of knowledge and intellect. Textbooks offer clarity and instruction in subjects new to our minds along with a challenge to our thinking abilities. The thickness and length, the cover and colored pages and even the price of the book do not determine the true value of the manuscript. Significance of a book is derived through the perception of a person in the right ways. It may become a scene of heavenly formation, books may virtually appear on clouds with a golden shimmer, holding a pristine value to a striving student. Where as an uninterested student will touch it with no emotions but only through the demands of his curriculum. Book authors, some perceive it to be a mundane task as if a writing slave of the book, though many authors truly contribute and perceive textbooks to transfer their scholastic roots. On the other hand, printing press personals may see it as a profitable product for their investors; a few publishers (I mean a handful) produce books in good faith and in defense of providing a tool for an education and not a burden. Fellow students and respective readers, this set of guidelines of values and emotions do not condemn any source where a book can be bought, but it does disagree with the structure of our system that places the priorities of things above a student and a scholar. This document is an outreach to those affluent minded people who can't buy some of their books but who will in return volunteer to offer their knowledge without a price tag.

Author: Umair Miraj, Phone#(832)661-7100, E-mail: umairmiraj@live.com.
